ADVERTISEMENT: Anyone who tours in a 4×4 knows the deal: storage space is tight, but the packing list just keeps growing. On every trip you notice you’re hauling along stuff you don’t really need. But some gear you can’t do without, and a water can you can rely on is exactly that. Over the years we’ve tested plenty of models, from metal to plastic, and most had some kind of niggle: too heavy, fiddly to use, or taps that gave up the ghost in no time. With the plastic water can from Nakatanenga we’ve finally found a companion that won us over on both function and handling.
Contrary to the note on the Nakatanenga website, the can actually slots into our GMB holder without any trouble, and it fitted a second GMB holder just as neatly. What we especially like is the 3-stage tap on the 20-litre can: turned to the left, it stays sealed. Turned to the right, the water flows only while you press. But if you press the button and turn the tap to the right at the same time, the water flows continuously, which is perfect when you want your hands free.
10- and 20-litre cansNakatanenga offers the water cans in three sizes: 10 litres, 20 litres and 40 litres. A really clever touch: the 40-litre can has a hose with a tap on the end, so you can draw water easily even when the can is lying on the roof rack.
The cans are made from BPA-free plastic and are specifically approved for carrying food and drink. You shouldn’t use them for fuel, though. Colour-wise you get the choice between grey and coyote: understated, but hard-wearing and just right for off-road use.
