At Abenteuer & Allrad in early June, Falken pushed its top model for off-road use to the front, the WILDPEAK R/T01. The tyre combines what an all-terrain and a mud-terrain each do well, because it is meant to run on tarmac just as happily as far beyond it. So the R/T01 is aimed at people who take heavy pickups and 4x4s both before and after the last paved road, and who do not want to keep swapping tyres.
The tread is the heart of the matter. On the road a large contact patch and stiff tread blocks keep the tyre running quiet and stable. The moment you head off-road, the open shoulder bites into mud and over rocks, and a stone-ejector function pushes pebbles and muck back out of the tread so the grip holds. Because sharp edges often lurk off the trail, Falken has also given the R/T01 a multi-ply sidewall that shrugs off cuts better.
At the sizes the range stays small, but it fits: the tyre comes in nine dimensions from 16 to 20 inches, in the aspect ratios 75, 70, 65, 60 and 55. The speed symbol Q allows up to 160 km/h, and the POR marking flags it as a tyre for professional off-road use, which is why it does not carry a standard EU tyre label.
