For 15 years, QUQUQ stood for one principle: one box, everything inside. Now Ulrich Vielmetter is turning the idea on its head and splitting the camper into a folding bed and separate modules. Here’s why that’s genuinely clever.
Ulrich Vielmetter invented the QUQUQ box in 2011, and the name said it all from the off. QUQUQ sounds like Kuckuck, the German for cuckoo, because just as the bird lays its egg in other birds’ nests, you simply set the box in your car and turn it into a camper. Ever since, QUQUQ has been seen as the inventor of the all-in-one camping box: a complete kitchen and bed in a single box, drop it in the car and off you go.
With the new CORE system, QUQUQ is now doing the exact opposite and taking the camper apart into its individual pieces. The system is made up of the folding bed frame, the BOARD, and the CUBES, the modules for cooking, washing, cooling and storage.
Why an inventor takes his own idea apart
The answer isn’t in the detail, it’s in the weight. Depending on the model and spec, the classic QUQUQ camping boxes weigh 50 to 70 kilograms. To fit one you’re better off with two people, and after the holiday the thing has to live somewhere too. So if you’re up on the third floor of a rented flat, you’re out of luck, and that’s exactly why QUQUQ CORE now exists.
A bed that fits under your bed
The BOARD weighs just 18.4 kilograms and folds down to a mere 12.5 centimetres flat. That makes it one of the smallest and lightest folding van beds on the market, and fitting it takes just a few moves. For the surface you use a folding mattress, an air mattress or a sleeping mat, whatever you’ve already got. After the trip, the BOARD then literally disappears under your bed at home, because it’s flat enough for that. No garage needed any more.
Roll it, don’t lug it
The CUBES make it easy on you too, because all four modules together weigh only 13 kilograms. You stack them into a slim tower, hook them onto the WHEELY mini transport trolley and roll them to the car. The complete travel setup weighs a touch over 30 kilograms: you carry the bed under your arm at a good 18 kilos, and pull the four modules along behind you on the trolley at 13 kilos, which means one person can move it all and set it up single-handed without any bother.
A modular kit for your trips
You combine the modules however your trip happens to need them: for a weekend the bed and the cooking cube are plenty, for the big trip you take the full set along. The CUBES are based on the universal Eurobox format, so they work without the bed too, on roof-tent trips for example. The BOARD is currently available for high-roof estates and smaller vans.
