In the Land Rover Defender scene, Rough Parts has been a familiar name for some time and stands for well-thought-out accessories and perfection. Now there are numerous new products from Rough Parts for the Mercedes G-Class, including a modular roof rack for the G-Class, recovery-board holders, folding windows and more.
Rough Parts is still a comparatively young company, and yet founder Markus Rauh looks back on around 25 years of work in the most varied areas of motorsport. The knowledge and experience gained in this way go into the products.
Folding windows, recovery-board holders, step guards, body protection, roof racks, headlight covers, table solutions, storage boxes, mounts for gear, carbon add-on parts and much more are available from the Swiss accessory specialist. And now accessories for the Mercedes G-Class too, popular with off-roader fans and off-road travellers. We present the new Rough Parts products for the G-Class.
Modular roof rack for the G-Class
When developing the Rough Parts roof rack for the G-Class, the focus was especially on the smallest possible height, low weight and modularity. The result is a roof rack that is only 45 mm high and tips the scales at just 34 kilograms.
The super-flat roof rack offers numerous mounting options and even has a hole pattern for airline rails. It is fixed by a concealed clamping mechanism. So, for all its functionality, the looks were considered too.
The Rough Parts roof rack for the G-Class consists of one to three modules of your choice, so you can adapt it to your needs:
- 1-element platform 73 cm x 126 cm: consisting of two cross bars, two insert panels and a stainless-steel mounting kit.
- 2-element platform 127 cm x 126 cm: consisting of three cross bars, four insert panels and a stainless-steel mounting kit.
- 3-element platform: 225 cm x 126 cm: consisting of four cross bars, six insert panels and a stainless-steel mounting kit.
The modular design has another advantage, as it lets the roof rack be shipped as cost-effectively as possible.
The cross bars are also available individually here, without the step panels. However, these cross bars cannot be combined with the insert panels later. The individual bar comes as a set with two side clamping units and a stainless-steel mounting kit in black.
Incidentally, a prototype of a similar roof rack is already being tested for the Suzuki Jimny. Here too, the lowest possible weight was right at the top of the requirements list during development. With a view to the low roof load of the little off-road box, this is an interesting development.
Extensive further accessories are available for the G-Class roof rack
Not only the roof rack itself is modular, but also the accessories available for it. From Rough Parts you get holders for headlights, awnings, tools and antennas, as well as mounts for your spare jerrycans. For side mounting on the roof-rack cross bars, Rough Parts has developed special adapters. To these you can attach gear such as shovels and the like, for example.
There is also an interesting platform extension for the roof rack. These extension modules come into play, for example, when a larger roof tent is to be mounted crosswise to the direction of travel and there isn’t enough room on the rack for it. With the extensions you have three different variants to choose from: extensions to increase the length, the width, or as an angled side section, for mounting awnings or tools, for example.
Rough Parts also has a canoe holder in its range. The special highlight – the holder can be folded and can therefore take not only a canoe but also a SUP. It also fits the roof rack for the G-Class.
Some of the tool holders also fit the side folding table.
Folding table and recovery-board holder for the G-Class
Combinations of a recovery-board holder and folding table are popular and come in many different versions. Now there is a version for the G-Class from Rough Parts too.
Handy: adjustable straps let you level the table when folded out. A built-in rubber damper is meant to prevent annoying rattling on the trail. The whole construction is about 65 mm high.
It is supplied complete with two folding mechanisms, adjustable straps, a rubber damper, stainless-steel locks, plain bearings, airline rails, a mounting adapter and a complete stainless-steel bolt set.
So you can mount further gear, Rough Parts offers various tool holders. To these you can attach your gear using the well-known Quick Fist rubber clamps.
Folding side window for the G-Class
Another new product from Rough Parts is the rear folding window for the G-Class. The frame is made entirely of stainless steel, black powder-coated, and fits the 461 with a long wheelbase. The flap is available either in black-coated aluminium or in lightly tinted grey glass (with an ECE test mark). Supplied are the stainless-steel frame complete with all mounting parts, two gas struts, two hinges with plain bearings, two keyed-alike locks and a black stainless-steel bolt set. The folding window is available for the left or the right side.
For the folding window you can get an optional interior storage box – as has long been available for the Defender. It joins seamlessly to the frame of the folding window and projects 100 mm into the interior. This turns the folding window into extra storage for gear and more, which is meant to be reachable from outside.
And another interesting option: the folding window can be fitted with a dog grille, which is meant to provide fresh air inside the vehicle.
Innovation and high quality standards at Rough Parts
Rough Parts produces in Switzerland and Germany. That allows a quick response in production and short transport routes. The roof rack for the G-Class and many other add-on parts are twice powder-coated and UV-resistant.
Special requests – in the colour scheme, for example – can also be carried out.
