Two New Winches from Superwinch: Scorpion 10000SR and Hand Hauler 1000

Superwinch has shown two new winches this year: a powerful vehicle winch and a portable battery winch for out and about. We have put together the key data on both models and where to get them.

Scorpion 10000SR: the vehicle winch

The Scorpion 10000SR is a 12-volt electric winch with 10,000 lbs (4.5 tonnes) of pulling power. That is exactly the point at which the overload cut-off steps in, before anything on the vehicle takes damage. The pull comes from a high-torque permanent magnet motor (1.9 hp) with dynamic braking on a four-stage planetary gearbox. Two speeds let you choose between power (low, 437:1) and pace (high, 156:1). Even in high gear it still pulls up to 1.36 tonnes, and line speed runs from 0.96 to 2.28 metres per minute in low gear up to 7.88 metres per minute in high.

From the factory it comes with a 16.5-metre synthetic rope (3/8 inch, with UV protection) and a soft shackle spliced in, so you recover completely without any metal in the line. The “SR” in the name stands for exactly this synthetic-rope design. The load is held by an automatic mechanical load-holding brake.

You can operate the winch by cable or wirelessly, both remotes are included. The wired remote has a rechargeable light built in. On top of that there is a patented light on the rope drum for recoveries in the dark, an internal control box and a gearbox that can be mounted in four positions. The winch is rated IP68 against water and dust.

For all its power it stays compact and light: it measures 420 x 182 x 198 millimetres (width x depth x height) and weighs 24.5 kilograms. A classic 10,000-lb winch tends to sit around 56 centimetres wide and close to 39 kilos. You can find the Superwinch Scorpion 10000SR at ProLux.

Hand Hauler 1000: the portable battery winch

The second newcomer is a completely different animal. The Superwinch Hand Hauler 1000 is a portable winch with a handle that you can take anywhere, onto the boat, onto the trailer or for a recovery away from your own vehicle, and it is a great fit for hunters too. At just 7.6 kilograms it pulls up to 1,000 lbs (454 kilograms) and lifts up to 800 lbs (363 kilograms).

It is driven by a brushless 24-volt motor with its own 2.0 Ah lithium battery, and the matching charger is included. The drum holds 8.5 metres of synthetic rope (5 millimetres) with a soft shackle. Here too you get two ways to control it: by wired remote (4 metres) or wirelessly up to 15 metres. An LED display shows the charge level, and the speed is variable.
