Jeep has been around since the 1940s and today belongs to Stellantis. A few years later Rover came onto the market with the Land Rover. The two share a similarly long, eventful history, both have off-road in their blood, and their fans stand irreconcilably in separate camps. Now an alliance between the two companies could be on the cards.
When times change, you have to change with them. Opponents could become allies, perhaps even friends. Yesterday, on 20 May 2026, the Stellantis group and Jaguar Land Rover (JLR) announced that they have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU), a kind of non-binding declaration of intent, aimed at a collaboration in the US market. The wording from both was already identical.
The new conditions in the automotive industry make it possible and necessary
To begin with, both companies have agreed to explore where synergy effects in product and technology development might be possible within the US.
“By working with partners to explore synergies in areas such as product and technology development, we can create meaningful benefits for both sides while remaining focused on delivering the products and experiences our customers love,” said Antonio Filosa, CEO of Stellantis.
JLR CEO P.B. Balaji added: “As we continue to evolve JLR for the future, collaboration will play an important role in unlocking new opportunities. Working with Stellantis allows us to explore complementary capabilities in product and technology development that support our long‑term growth plans for the US market.”
The rest is open
Beyond that, the details from both sides were no more precise for now. So it’s unclear which technology might be exchanged between the two firms. But the fact that it’s about the American market shows that potential is seen there, which is underpinned by the rise in 4×4 sales there, and that they want to arm themselves for future challenges and uncertainties, just think of all the tariff back-and-forth.
Should actual joint products result from this collaboration, I’m curious to see how the two fan camps will react. I, for one, won’t be buying myself a thick gold chain specially.
