Book Review: Explore Kyrgyzstan Adventure Guide by Olivia Casari and Victor Michaud

Kyrgyzstan, a rugged beauty along the old Silk Road. Mountains, lakes, culture and much more, Kyrgyzstan has it all to offer the traveller. A country that for many off-road travellers is one of THE dream destinations. With the Explore Kyrgyzstan Adventure Guide by Olivia Casari and Victor Michaud, there’s the right travel guide to go with it for adventure travellers.

The book is aimed at off-road, van, motorcycle and bicycle travellers. Over more than 300 pages, the two describe 24 routes, give valuable information on culture, typical local food, flora and fauna, navigation and on preparing the vehicle and the trip. The two even thought of a small Kyrgyz/English vocabulary at the end of the book. That makes communication easier. I particularly liked the tips on responsible travel.

The Explore Kyrgyzstan Adventure Guide is both attractive and practical in design

The landscape format alone makes this book stand out, and it’s pretty heavy too. The book itself is built as a combination of route description and travel guide, and as the icing on the cake you also get great illustrations with numerous images and photos. The many lovely photos, some of which would surely have deserved a large format, make you want to set off.

An overview map at the start of the Adventure Guide makes planning and orientation easier for you. In the book you’ll find great routes that are very well and clearly described. All routes are divided into difficulty levels. Details of the best time to travel are no more missing than, particularly important in mountain regions, the elevation profiles of the individual routes. Detail maps with additional information and marked sights, with a total of around 500 GPS points, round off the information. The map is available separately in A2 format. An explanation of how to read the routes makes it easier for you to get started.

Verdict on the Explore Kyrgyzstan Adventure Guide

This travel guide offers a wealth of useful information as well as very lovely route descriptions and is designed with a lot of attention to detail. I drove a few of the described routes myself and can tell you that there really are some dream routes among them. The Explore Kyrgyzstan Adventure Guide shouldn’t be missing on any trip to the Central Asian country. For leafing through and dreaming of the next trip, it’s ideally suited too. Note: the travel guide is in English!
