A crackling campfire in the evening after a lovely off-road tour. That has something natural, fascinating, archaic and relaxing all at once. But before it gets to that, firewood has to be made. Work first, then pleasure. But the work can also become a pleasure. Namely with the right tool.

For this moment, a good hatchet on board shouldn’t be missing. You’ll find the Hultan trekking hatchet, for example, in the Mehari-Offroad shop.

The head torch is part of the basic equipment of every off-roader and overlander. A small yet powerful head torch is practical in many situations, be it when working on the vehicle, with a breakdown on the road, when fitting snow chains in the dark or simply when setting up camp in the dark. One such powerful head torch is, for example, the Ledlenser work head torch H5R Work. It carries protection class IP67 and is thus protected against dust and temporary submersion. The lamp is available, e.g. here at Scheinwerfer-LUXX.

After getting stuck, shovelling is often the order of the day. Especially in sand or snow, shovelling is frequently a simple means of getting free again before unpacking the big recovery equipment.

The Fiskars all-purpose shovel is already a real classic here, and especially on loose ground the proven shovel does good service. The wide blade helps to clear away a fair amount of material in both sand and snow. On top of that, the packed size at about 70 cm length and the weight of around half a kilogram are manageable. An aluminium blade and plastic shaft stand for durability.

The Fiskars all-purpose shovel is available, for example, at Mehari.

Off-roaders and off-road travellers frequently have a lot of power-hungry equipment with them, and everyone has their own philosophy for supplying it and charging batteries. One option is so-called battery boxes, or power stations.

The Explorer 500 from the Californian manufacturer Jackery is specified with a capacity of 518 Wh, a continuous output of 500 watts and a peak output of up to 1,000 watts, and thus already has plenty of power for many applications on the road. It has various connections (1x 220V socket, 2x DC connections, 1x 12-volt cigarette-lighter socket and 3x USB-A connections) and weighs just six kilograms. The dimensions are likewise manageable. Many of you surely have a solar panel on the off-roader. That really is sensible equipment for travel vehicles. Be it permanently installed, so-called framed modules, or also flat, flexible modules perhaps on the roof or the bonnet. You may also use a mobile, foldable module to set up next to the vehicle. It would surely also be practical, when we’re out and about on foot or by canoe for longer, to have a module with us. But vehicle solutions are too bulky there.

The Nano Tiger solar bag contains a mini solar module and has two USB sockets. With it you can charge smartphone, tablet, GPS tracker and the like on the road. To do so, simply lay the module in the sun, perhaps fasten it to your rucksack while hiking, and plug in the charging cable. You’ll surely think of more use cases.

You can get the mini solar bag 20W Nano Tiger at the outfitter Tigerexped*.

When you’re out and about not in the off-road vehicle but on foot, power is often in short supply. Mobile phone, GPS tracker, torch, head torch and the like are quickly flat and thus not operational when they’re needed.

A compact power bank then comes just at the right moment. And these little helpers are particularly practical when they also have a fair amount of capacity. The VARTA Power Bank Energy with 20,000 mAh is one such – admittedly somewhat heavier – yet powerful power bank. It has four connections (1x Micro USB input, 2x USB A output, 1x USB Type C connection).

For this, two aluminium washing poles are fastened to the airline rail and the eight-metre-long washing line can be threaded over various runs. The scope of delivery includes the mounting poles and the washing line made of orange paracord as well as a cotton bag for transport.
