Pop-top conversions for the Land Rover Defender and Toyota Troopy are widespread and popular with travellers. A 4×4 or station wagon lends itself to it. By now there are a few pop-tops for the INEOS Grenadier, even if the choice is still limited.
A pop-top is a good way to turn a 4×4 into a travel vehicle with more room. The vehicle height often doesn’t gain much, and the gain in space is frequently enormous.
Pop-tops for the INEOS Grenadier
The choice for the Grenadier is, as hinted, still very limited. This may be connected with the vehicle’s design, which makes fitting a pop-top more challenging. Unlike on a Defender, for example, where the original roof is very simple and only bolted on. And yet there are pop-tops for the INEOS Grenadier, which we present to you here.
Silenus pop-top with 270° awning from Alu-Cab for the Grenadier

The Silenus pop-up roof from Alu-Cab is a roof conversion for the INEOS Grenadier that turns the vehicle into a full, travel-ready camper. The standard roof area is replaced by a sturdy aluminium construction developed specially for demanding off-road use.
The roof offers a large sleeping surface
Opened up, the Silenus pop-up roof offers a generous sleeping surface of about 2.60 m long and 1.20 m wide, enough room for two people. The built-in mattress with a thickness of around 72 mm makes for pleasant sleeping comfort.

The pop-top creates lots of room inside
Through the extra build height of about 28 cm, there’s a vehicle increase when closed, while opened up a comfortable sitting and moving space is created inside. The construction is made entirely from light but extremely sturdy aluminium and is designed for lasting load. The tent fabric used is UV-resistant, waterproof and has sealed seams, so the roof offers reliable protection even in adverse weather. A built-in insulation also improves the interior climate.

The Silenus pop-top for the Grenadier has extensive kit
The standard kit includes LED interior lighting and charging points made as USB and USB-C connectors, so mobile devices can be charged conveniently. Thanks to built-in mounting rails and fixing points, further accessories like solar panels, roof racks or awnings can be added without trouble.
With a total weight of around 130 kg including mechanism and mattress, the vehicle stays off-road capable. The fitting should be done properly, as it’s a comprehensive conversion in which the original roof is replaced. All in all the Silenus pop-up roof is an ideal solution for anyone who wants to build their Grenadier into a companion for adventure and long-distance travel. Headspace Campers pop-top for the INEOS Grenadier

Photo: Headspace Campers
The Headspace Campers pop-top grew out of the travel experience of the company founder. Like so many who switch to a pop-top, he was out for many months with a 4×4 and roof tent in Australia and Europe. Oliver began tinkering in a shed and kitted his 110 Defender out with a pop-top, keeping the original roof, for a crossing of the Simpson Desert. The beginning of Headspace Campers.

Now Headspace Campers has a version for the INEOS Grenadier too
The roof can be tilted by 45 degrees, so it’s not only possible to stand upright in the vehicle or get changed up top, but also to sleep with your head at the hinge end, making getting out easier. The underside of the bed is about 650 mm below the window line of the front doors, so there’s enough headroom.

The roof raises the vehicle height only a little
The conversion raises the height of the vehicle by only about 80 mm. The roof load is 150 kg. The total area of the mattress is about 1150 mm wide and 2400 mm long (of which 550 mm goes to the access doors).

Availability in Europe
Currently there’s no partner business or importer in Europe. But Headspace Campers offers a “Fit It Yourself (FIY) option” and ships the pop-top not only Australia-wide but internationally, which will of course be a not-insignificant cost factor. You’ll find more information on the Headspace Camper pop-top on the Headspace Campers website and in this video:
Expedition Centre Mulgo pop-top for the INEOS Grenadier

Photo: Expedition Centre
Expedition Centre has been building pop-tops in Australia since 2009 and was the first company to realise a pop-top conversion for the Grenadier. Since then the company has optimised the design further.
The interior height of the vehicle stays unchanged
This means the station wagon can still be used as a 5-seater. The roof can be used as a roof rack. The flat profile and the integrated, light construction of the aluminium pop-up roof mean the vehicle’s aerodynamic properties are only minimally affected. The design of the Mulgo pop-top follows the original maker’s look. The Grenadier’s distinctive handles in the roof recesses, and the four original sockets, were integrated into the design.

Thanks to gas struts and two release levers accessible from inside, the pop-up roof can be raised and lowered quickly. The rigid platform on which the sleeping surface sits can be lowered independently of the pop-up roof, so standing height is ensured.
Comfortable bed for two people
The mattress is 70 mm thick. Sleeping bags or duvets stay in place when the roof is folded down and fit perfectly into the space between the supporting platform and the roof. As an upgrade, Mulgo offers the Switzerland-designed Fanello bed. Windows on both sides and at the rear make for enough ventilation. All windows have mosquito nets and can be closed from inside with the hook-and-loop fastener. The large windows allow a panoramic view from the bed. The fabric panels, by the way, are made in Germany.

Availability in Europe
Daniel from Expedition Centre explained to us that he has a simple rule for offering the Mulgo roofs outside his own workshop, where the roof fittings usually take place. As he doesn’t want customers to become “guinea pigs”, Expedition Centre first builds several units on site. This to be sure that all the problems are eliminated that could arise if they don’t do the fitting themselves. So the plan is to offer the roof outside Australia too and ship it to Europe and the rest of the world, and if a business wants to keep stock for installation, to arrange that too.
You’ll find more information on the Expedition Centre website.
